Cheer and Music go hand in hand - as party invitations arrive and heart-wrenching adverts appear on our screens, we don our trees and party dresses to set the festive mood. Christmas songs bring in the emotions of Christmas past and create new memories of Christmas present. As we dress our trees and homes, the blast of ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ lifts us up to begin the planning for our warm family Christmas. Our Christmas cards are purchased, written and then, after a big gulp at the price of the stamps, posted!
Friends and Family – Next the diary is filled with parties, gatherings and dinners. The work party is often one of the first. A chance to let the hair down and discuss the politics of the company! Possibly some new networking opportunities for some. Who knows who may turn up at that trendy venue! At least it is a mind numbing opportunity away from the family disputes and discussions about who is going where and why for Christmas dinner!!
Preparations – Yes, the food and booze need listing for those two days for which we will cater for about two weeks. No we don’t learn! And neither do we have any idea where we’re going to store it all. We still haven’t laid the carpet of or fixed the flat-pack drawers together in the guest bedroom so even the carefully-selected presents are living in the boot of the car until time allows to wrap presents but then, you remember you didn’t add wrapping paper to your list. And then the best-laid plans just get steadily worse. The boiler breaks down as the coldest day for forty five years arrives, the oven is taking thrice the time to brown a dozen frozen sausage rolls and, the dog is throwing up over your new guest-room carpet! Oh joy – it’s Christmas in just two days!
Giving – Yes, why not, you’ve spent all that time, energy and money with eyeballs bulging from two nights lack of sleep - why not enjoy the giving, that is your reward! Then once the presents are opened and the dinner prepped and cooked and eaten – whilst the family are watching that movie premier – give yourself a treat and OPEN your book!
