Apart from meeting 25 fabulous authors at The Grand and the opportunity to WIN 25 BOOKS – what else can you see and do in Folkestone?

As a frequent visitor to Folkestone and Hythe for many years staying with friends who live in the area, I’ve had the privilege of getting out and about and exploring this amazing coastal resort first-hand and still enjoy this pleasure immensely. One reason in particular is that access has improved enormously. For example, from London St. Pancras the journey time is just 53 minutes. From Ebbsfleet International which is closer for me, it’s just 36 minutes, and Ashford International, only 15 minutes. Travelling by car may not be as quick but is also easy as Folkestone is only a few minutes from the M20 making it just an hour and forty-five-minute drive from central London. And naturally, should you need somewhere to stay, The Grand is a beautiful aparthotel on The Leas of Folkestone which overlooks the vast English Channel, walkable from either Folkestone Central or Folkestone West as The Grand is in a striking position on The Leas. Parking is also easy and it’s a great spot from which to start exploring.

A graceful majestic character, The Grand dates back to 1899 when it was completed by builder Daniel Baker and opened not only to the public, but to British royalty. King Edward VII was a frequent visitor and who, by his regal presence, enticed many people to the Leas and The Grand and its elegant dining rooms and iconic Palm Court. It was the place to see and be seen and remains a hub of activities. Keppels wine bar and award-winning bistro continues with period functions offering jazz nights and vintage dances. The Grand’s amazing history and versatility will astound you. It’s a wonderful place to stay as well as an icon of the Folkestone skyline. Photo provided by The Grand.

The Leas (The Grand) last Century black and White

Situated high on The Leas just in front of the Grand is a great spot for whiling away the hours by the bandstand imagining long gone eras and bands playing those nostalgic tunes whilst enjoying the superb views across the English Channel and on finer days, a glimpse of the French coast. It’s like travelling back in time. But before you get too comfortable take a stroll along the esplanade along the cliff and gardens feeling the soft breeze on your skin whilst contemplating your evening entertainment at the Leas Cliff Hall, a nearby entertainment venue advisable to book in advance. Acts are varied, whether touring bands, comedians, musicals or theatre productions, there’s something for every taste.

From the Leas, the zig-zag path leads to the lower promenade and a stretch of a beautiful sandy beach. It’s useful to know all this is achievable by bicycle too. In fact, it’s possible to cycle most of the coast on the wide, flat esplanades. You have the luxury to choose to walk or cycle down the zig-zag path to the beach and Mermaid Cafe through the lower coastal park. This takes you via a grass amphitheatre and adventure play area, where many free activities take place in summer before heading for the beach. Explore further too walking along the lower promenade towards Sandgate or the bustling harbour central Folkestone.

Folkestone Warren

Folkestone toward harbour

After that delightful stroll or ride taking in the beach and sea air, your appetite will soon be grumbling so will appreciate what’s in store. The harbour area and Harbour Arm have recently become a highlight of any visit to Folkestone due to fine dining options around the harbour and the numerous pop-up bars, music and restaurants on the harbour arm. You’ll hear the buzz feel the vibrancy as you approach, especially at the weekends. Breweries and bakeries fight with Champagne and cocktail bars, tasty plant-based cuisine complete with Greek delights, Indian street food, hog roasts and a whole host of artisan treats, not to mention fluffy pancakes. It’s an experience you’ll not want to miss before heading for the Creative Quarter and art galleries of the High Street.

If its wet and blowy however and you’d rather find shelter, head back up again to the Leas and The Grand for their traditional ‘Afternoon Tea’ at their Salon de The via the Leas lift. A funicular railway which is around 135 years old, Grade II listed, and one of the oldest water lifts in the country but it will carry you up and back to another time – towards the Grand or another option is the Folkestone Museum exploring even more of the town’s people and history. In the Town Hall, Guildhall Street, explore ancient, military, maritime and natural artefacts as well as fashion and social. Adults as well as small adults will enjoy the displays and interactive activities this little gem offers. If it’s more of the military history that appeals, you’ll need to travel to RAF Hawkinge, a bus from the harbour every 30 mins or a 10 minute car journey north, to visit the Kent Battle of Britain Museum. A must see. Owned by a devoted enthusiast and helped by equally enthused volunteers, it claims to be the largest private museum dedicated to the heroes of 1940.

So, I hope you’ve been tempted to make a weekend trip to Folkestone on Friday 25th Oct beginning with the #AuthorsAtTheGrand event at The Grand meeting many authors who are on standby to say hello, have a chat about their books, their genre, sign books you can purchase from them on the night at discounted prices and of course, meet other readers and discuss books with them too. Like the other authors, I hope to see you there.

What was the inspiration for your debut ‘A Fortnight is not Enough’?

I began with the fantasy of enjoying a holiday so much that I refused to come home.

What was is that drew you to the setting for your story?

We enjoyed a holiday in the south of France in 2016. Its connection with famous artists provided a way of developing the story.

Tell us about your main character – what motivates her, what are her dreams, and what is her worst nightmare?

Imogen is 18 and finding her way in life – in fact this could be regarded as a Young Adult novel. She loves painting and would like to work as an artist. She is being manipulated by an older boyfriend when she meets Jules, an art student, who motivates her to follow her dreams.

What was the very first novel you penned and where is it now?

I’ve written various novels for years. The earliest one I still have on the computer has a theme of Good versus Evil. It concerns a woman whose dabbling in magic brings her under the influence of and attractive but sinister man.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve recently completed a novel entitled The Day of the Dolly Bird, which is a romance set in the Swinging Sixties. Through the New Writers Scheme of The Romantic Novelists’ Association it has received a largely favourable report from a professional novelist.

I’m currently working on a historical romance set in World War I.

When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved reading and had the urge to write. I used to dabble as a child, and a friend and I used to produce little monthly magazines.

What would you advise a new novelist?

Be persistent! Of course, you need to study the market, but still bring your own ideas to the writing.

Other than writing, what other hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

I try to keep fit by doing Zumba and taking country walks with a group.

I do voluntary work one day a week for a charity which trains disabled adults.

I love travel, particularly to the continent, and enjoy classical music.

What is your favourite part of the UK?

I particularly love spectacular scenery, like in the Lake District, or Perthshire.

Which writer or writers inspire you most?

Jane Austen is hard to beat, and George Eliot. Among contemporary writers I love the humour of Terry Pratchett and the quirky stories of Marina Lewicka. I enjoy books by Barbara Kingsolver and I was recently very impressed with Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and mean to read some more of her books. I also loved The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Amazingly it was her debut novel.

If you were to invite three prominent people, dead or alive to dinner, which three would you invite and why?

What a tough choice! At least one needs a strong sense of humour. I’ve decided on Leonardo da Vinci and Marie Curie with Victoria Coren Mitchell to provide an element of wackiness.

What would be your favourite menu? Starter – Main – Desert

Salade Niçoise, Noisettes of Lamb and Strawberry Pavlova – yum.

Karen, thank you very much for hosting me on your Blog.

Christmas comes but once a year… and the next… and the next! Such potential for happiness and joy. I’m sure we can all picture it – the family gathered around the Christmas tree singing carols; grandpa snoring quietly by the fireside, his belly full of plum pudding; young lovers kissing under the mistletoe and Tiny Tim staring out at snow falling on a picture postcard village. Okay, I may have got a little carried away here.

Wendy Clarke

Whatever your idea of the perfect Christmas (and I’ll be the first to put up my hand and say that I love this time of year) there are so many things that can go wrong. So much potential for disappointment. In my Christmas story collection, Silent Night, there are a diverse cast of characters who take centre stage: young, old, male and female and it’s fair to say that not all their Christmases go to plan. I’ve used their stories to create my own list of potential pitfalls to help you to make the very best of this festive season.

1. Don’t always presume the grass will be greener on the other side.

In my story ‘Finding Santa’, Marie thinks that her children would rather be jetting off to sunny Tenerife than spending it at home without their dad after the marriage break up. It takes bad weather and a cancelled flight for her to see how wrong she’s been. I sometimes think that it might be nice to go somewhere completely different at Christmas and get away from the dodgy weather, the re-runs of bad sitcoms and fighting my way to the till at the supermarket but, in reality, I know I’d miss the family traditions and the chaos that makes the day so special.

2. Don’t leave the Christmas shopping to the last minute.

This is what Keith does in my story, ‘All I Want for Christmas’. His step-daughter, Rachel, wants a Moshi Monster more than anything else in the world – but so do all the other children in the area. By the time poor Keith hits the shops, the shelves are bare. Luckily for him, a chance encounter with a neighbour gives him an idea for an even better present. I hate leaving Christmas shopping to the last minute – What about you?

3. Don’t think the best presents are always the biggest.

David, in the story ‘The Greatest Gift’, stands outside the department store, trying to think of the perfect gift for his girlfriend. As a child, he’d always thought that the biggest box contained the best present – surely Lyndsay would think the same. As he stands there, hoping inspiration will strike, he watches people as they walk past and learns an important lesson. I think too much importance is placed on material gifts, but I expect my grandchildren would tell you different!

4. Don’t plan Christmas in too much detail – you might regret it.

Ryan in ‘On My Own’ thinks that to make Christmas successful, the day has to be organised with military precision. Unfortunately for him, his girlfriend, Bella, thinks otherwise. She leaves him to his spreadsheets and spends Christmas alone. I’m sure plenty of us have fantasised about renting a little cottage by the sea for some ‘me time’ at this busy time of year… But would we really like it? I’m not so sure.

5. Don’t expect this Christmas to be the same as the last.

In the opening story, ‘Project Christmas’, Andrew wants to make Christmas the same as it’s always been for the sake of the children after his wife dies. But does he need to? With a little help from his sister and the kids, he discovers that, in some circumstances, different can be a good thing. It’s easy to stick to the same traditions and I know that, out of habit, I find myself buying the same food, decorating the tree in the same way and organising my day as I always have. Maybe this year I’ll try something a little different… be more adventurous.

However you spend your special day, I hope that you have a wonderful time. Who knows, it might even snow and you’ll be able to make a snow angel like the grandfather in my story ˜Do you Believe in Angels’.

Interview with

Elaine Everest
Bestselling Author of The Woolworth’s Girls has a brand-new release 4th May
The Butlin’s Girls

Elaine, welcome to my blog, it’s lovely to have you here with your new novel, The Butlin’s Girls. I can’t wait to hear more about you since your success with The Woolworth’s Girls and learn more about your writing career. For readers, scroll down for my review of The Butlin’s Girls

Firstly, could you tell us what inspired such an original and nostalgic story?
Thank you for hosting me on your blog today, Karen. The Butlins Girls was the second book in my first two-book contract with Pan Macmillan with the contract stating ‘The Woolworths Girls and one other.’ No pressure there! I wanted my story to remain in the Erith, Kent area as that is my ‘patch’ for my sagas. With a new cast of characters I thought I’d move on in time slightly and started to research what was happening at the end of WW2. It was then I noticed that Billy Butlin was reopening his holiday camps after having them requisitioned and wondered if one of my girls fancied working in a holiday camp - and more to the point, why would she leave her home to do so…?

How did your writing career begin?
I’ve been writing for twenty years professionally although for the first few years I supplemented it with some part time temporary work until my cash flow was at a level I could call it an income. 1997 was the year my dad died and it made me realise I need to start following my dream of being a writer and not just playing at it. I suppose you could call it my ‘light bulb year’. I started with short fiction, there were many more markets back then, and quickly moved to writing features specialising in features for the canine market as my hobby (or life style) was in breeding, exhibiting and judging dogs. Novel writing was still a dream at that time.

You also successfully run Creative Writing Classes in Kent, what made you want to be a creative writing tutor?
The opportunity to teach creative writing came about in 2003 after I won the BBC Radio Kent Short Story Writer of the Year. I’d previously attended a creative writing class at the Dartford Adult Education Centre and was approached to teach classes there and also at Meopham and Gravesend. Although I was able to teach my subject through my own experience I did study and obtain the right qualification to teach adults of sixteen and over. It was an interesting course but to this day I don’t feel that all tutors in Adult Education need such certificate. Lace makers, quilters, holistic therapists… Why do they need a paper certificate. This has been the downfall of adult education centres.

What top three tips would you give a would-be journalist starting out today?
1. Decide what kind of journalist you wish to be and stay focused on your dream.
2. Ask yourself if you need to take three years out to gain a degree or instead learn on the job and via evening classes.
3. Join online forums for freelance journalists. There’s wealth of information to be found and so many helpful journos to guide you on your way.

What top three tips would you give a would-be short-story writer starting out today?
1. Read the magazines. If you don’t how will you know the market. If you don’t like the stories you see in publication then don’t bother trying to write short fiction.
2. Attend workshops and classes and learn your craft. Don’t expect overnight success.
3. Be professional. Writing short stories is not a hobby, you are joining a profession so never write for free and follow the rules.

What top three tips would you give an aspiring novelist starting out today?
1. Join an association. If you have romance in your stories then join the Romantic Novelist Association. Their New Writers’ Scheme is second to none.
2. Read, read, read the genre you wish to be published in.
3. Attend workshops, events and network. Get to know the publishing world. Novel writing is no longer a solitary occupation.

Finally, if you didn’t write your lovely and well-researched historical novels, what genre would you choose specifically and why?
I would love to be a crime writer. Most of my novels do have some crime in them. In fact I am a member of the Crime Writers’ Association on the strength of the crime in my romance sagas! However, I’m very happy to be writing historical sagas.

And what can we expect next from Elaine Everest?
At least one more Woolworths story will follow later this year with another novel currently being written for May 2018.

Book blurb:
‘Molly Missons gazed around in awe. So this was Butlin’s. Whitewashed buildings, bordered by rhododendrons, gave a cheerful feeling to a world still recovering from six years of war. The Skegness holiday camp covered a vast area, much larger than Molly expected to see.’
Molly Missons hasn’t had the best of times recently. Having lost her parents, now some dubious long-lost family have darkened her door – attempting to steal her home and livelihood…
After a horrendous ordeal, Molly applies for a job as a Butlin’s Aunty. When she receives news that she has got the job, she immediately leaves her small hometown – in search of a new life in Skegness.
Molly finds true friendship in Freda, Bunty and Plum. But the biggest shock is discovering that star of the silver screen, Johnny Johnson, is working at Butlin’s as head of the entertainment team. Johnny takes an instant liking to Molly and she begins to shed the shackles of her recent traumas. Will Johnny be just the distraction Molly needs – or is he too good to be to be true?

Thank you, Karen

So Welcome Elaine, and I’m sure The Butlin’s Girls will fly off the shelves – it’s the perfect nostalgia summer read.

My 5* Review of The Butlin’s Girls by Elaine Everest

The Butlin’s Girls by Elaine Everest had me gripped from the very beginning. I adored The Woolworth’s Girls so was eager to read Elaine’s second novel and it’s a read I would thoroughly recommend. From the start, the story takes you on a warm summery ride into the life of Molly who has just suffered the tragic loss of her parents. When the evil villains, Harriet and her son Simon, enter her home, she is forced to seek a safe sanctuary and with the help of her parent’s old friends Kath and George, she discovers Butlin’s is a natural choice. Here she meets not only her film idol, Johnny but two amazingly warm but also troubled friends, Bunty and Plum. The novel is beautifully paced with each of the character’s individual stories steadily unfolding, providing one another with so much love and support, their troubles are steadily resolved, including Molly’s. You won’t fail to want to keep reading. And, Johnny may find her amusing to begin with, but you will just love the way his sweet care and devotion brings her so much happiness. A real pleasure.

So pleased to have you here Elaine. I’m looking forward to hearing more about you and your writing.
Firstly, Congratulations on The Woolworth’s Girls – Love the cover!

Cover The Woolworths Girls

Thank you, Karen. I’m delighted to be on your blog today. Thank you for inviting me.

The Woolworth’s Girls is a great title – where did you get the idea?
I have to reply honestly and say that the Pan Macmillan team came up with the title. I’m pleased they did as I really like the The Woolworths Girls and it is much better than my working title, Sixpenny Sarah,

Tell us how and what you did to research The Woolworth’s Girls?
The book is set in Erith, Kent, which is where I was born. I lived in the area most of my life so know the people, the old streets that no longer exist and even the Woolworths store where my story is set. One of my characters lives in a house in Alexandra Road where I lived when first married. The council (LB Bexley) archives were a great help as was the archivist of The Woolworths Museum. It was a joy to dig deep into stories that I grew up with.

If the Woolworth’s Girls was made into a musical, what ten songs would you feature in it?
I do have a playlist for The Woolworths Girls that is mentioned throughout the story and I write in the back of the book about my songs. So many have personal memories for me from my family singing them at parties and wedding although I couldn’t squeeze in Are you Lonesome Tonight or My Way!
The ten songs I would feature in my musical would be:

Goodnight Sweetheart
I’ll See You in my Dreams
If You Were the Only Girl in the World.
Hello, Hello, Whose Your Lady Friend?
The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo
Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty
Bless ‘Em All!
Over My shoulder (goes one care)
By a Waterfall
I Found a Million-Dollar Bay – in a five and ten cent store
(The American version of Woolworths)

Your Woolworth’s girls were likely to have bought their Christmas presents in the store. What presents do you imagine they would give to each other and the people they know?
The girls did purchase calendars for their mothers one Christmas. Remember those pretty chocolate box cottage pictures with a piece of ribbon to hang on the wall? Make up became scarce as the war progressed and to get hold of a lipstick for each other would have been a delight. Maisie was the seamstress and was always sewing pretty items as well as make do and mend. Her gifts were often items of clothing whilst Freda would knit something practical and useful.

As well as a musical, I believe The Woolworth’s Girls would make a lovely Sunday evening drama – who would play your major characters?
I would love my main character, Sarah, to be played by Jessica Raine from Call the Midwife.
Sheridan Smith would make the perfect Maisie and Sophie McShera, who played kitchen maid, Daisy, in Downton Abbey, would make an ideal Freda.
For the handsome Alan it would have to be Julian Ovenden, again from Downton Abbey. He is also an amazing singer and Alan did like to sing.
I’d always envisaged Victoria Wood as Sarah’s nan, Ruby, but sadly that could never be now.

As well as writing your novels Elaine, what else do you fit into your time?
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m mad about dogs. Since the seventies I’ve exhibited, judged, sat on committee and bred the occasional Old English Sheepdog litter. These days we just have Henry, a Polish Lowland Sheepdog, who has already qualified for Crufts 2017. Apart from that I always have my nose in a book and enjoy writing retreats and writerly events with friends.

And, as my tutor, and very good one at that, could you share how you came to start ‘The Write Place’ Creative Writing School and what you have in store for its future?
Thank you! I am a qualified teacher of adults and for some years taught creative writing for Kent Adult Education Services. However, it became apparent that the management only really cared about ‘bums on seats’ and I wanted to help students become published writers. So, I upped and left. Soon after I set up The Write Place (www.thewriteplace.org.uk) at The Mick Jagger Centre in Dartford and have never looked back.
For the future: I will keep waving my ‘big stick’ so you all keep writing and will continue to enjoy our celebrations (cake and wine) as all the fabulous students become published, win competitions and sell more books. We have a fab crowd of wonderful writers at all levels of their writing careers. It’s a very special place.

What would be your top six writing tips?

Author – Elaine Everest

1. Keep writing
2. Interact with other writers
3. Don’t be despondent
4. Never stop learning
5. Read a lot!
6. Never believe your own PR!

And finally, The Woolworth’s Girls is bound to be a big success, can you tell us what’s next?
I hope so – wouldn’t that be lovely? It’s been a fascinating journey to be with a major publisher and have a fabulous agent. Next is The Butlins Girls (Pan Macmillan) that will be published in early 2017. The story starts in Erith and moves to Skegness as Billy Butlin reopens his holiday camps after WW2. Love, friendship, intrigue and lots of fun!

Wishing you every success Elaine, can’t wait to read it and look forward to your next. Thank you for visiting my blog.
Thank you so much, Karen, for asking such interesting questions. Xx

About Elaine I was born and brought up in the North West of Kent and love to write stories set around Erith and Slade Green – places I know so well. It is heartwarming to know that many people look back with fondness to the town, the people and a life long gone. Twenty years ago I moved a few miles away from Erith and now live in Swanley with my husband, Michael, and Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Henry, where I write nostalgic stories set in and around the county.

Welcome Rebecca,

Rebecca Pugh is the author of the beautiful title Return to Bluebell Hill which is her debut novel, and her latest novel, A Home in Sunset Bay. Rebecca is also an avid reader who has her own book blog writing reviews and interviews with numerous authors. I feel honoured to have her on my blog today.
Rebecca, welcome. Lovely to have you here telling us about your writing.

Thank you so much for having me, Karen. I’m delighted to be here!

Return to Bluebell Hill

I just loved your debut novel Return to Bluebell Hill and can’t wait to indulge in your second, A Home in Sunset Bay. The title evokes such a romantic setting; why did you choose it?
First of all, thank you so much for your lovely words, Karen. I am delighted that you loved Return to Bluebell Hill.
Secondly, you know me! I’m all for the romance, and what isn’t romantic about a sunset? I really wanted to capture the whole seaside feel and a sunset set the tone perfectly for me. And then when Carina sent me my final cover, I was bowled over. They’d captured the image in my mind perfectly.

Where did the idea for the story come from?
Sisters have always been a massive part of my life, so that’s definitely where the main idea came from. I wanted to explore the relationship between Mia and Laurie, while having fun at the same time. People get their wires crossed, family included, so often, and I wanted to take a closer look at how that could affect Mia and Laurie’s life, despite the fact that they’d gone their separate ways.

If A Home in Sunset Bay was to become a film, who would play your two leading characters and why?
Mia, the younger of the Chapman sisters, would definitely have to be played by Anne Hathaway. Not only because she is one of my favourite actresses, but because she’s so brilliant at what she does. And, without sounding like I’m insulting Anne (which I would never, ever, ever do!), she plays the harassed/rushed off her feet woman so perfectly. That’s what Mia would be like, I think. She’s always so busy with the diner, very rarely taking time out for herself.
For Laurie, the eldest of the sisters, I’d choose Rachel McAdams, as a brunette. I love her, and think she’d make the perfect big sister if A Home in Sunset Bay were to be made into a film. Laurie has spent her entire life performing to please other people. Finally, she’s taken a break. Sunset Bay makes her realise more than a few things, and with her little sister by her side, realisation dawns. They’d make a fantastic pair!

Are you a planner or a panster?
I try to plan. I really do. But the majority of the time, my ideas spill straight from my head onto the page. I make notes here and there, jot little bits and pieces down, but that’s as far as it goes usually.

Because of your lovely Becca’s Books blog, we know you love to read a lot, did this start as a child and at what point did you know you wanted to write?
I can’t really pinpoint exactly when my love for reading began. My mum always tells me a story about when I was younger and in school, about how the teacher had to have a word with her because I wasn’t doing too well with my reading. We sat down together that night, and I have no idea what happened, but I haven’t stopped since. Reading is a part of my life. It’s something I do every single day.
And I think I’ve always known, somewhere deep inside me, that I wanted to become a writer. It was always one of those dreams that I’d sometimes fantasise about, but didn’t actually expect to ever become a reality. And do you know what the craziest thing about it is? It’s still sinking in. Even after two publication days, reviews coming etc. I can’t really believe that this is me now. That this is what I do. Life truly is full of surprises.

From your reading, who are your most memorable characters?
Heroine, Hero, Antagonist, friend
Heroine – There’s quite a few for this one but the heroine who always stays with me is Susannah Leyton from Charlotte Betts’ The Apothecary’s Daughter. Susannah fights so many tough battles throughout her journey in this novel. I’ll always remember how I felt, in the richly described setting. It completely overwhelmed me and I was lost to it! It was the first of Charlotte’s that I read and I absolutely loved it.
Hero – I love, love, love Travis Maddox from Jamie McGuire’s Beautiful series. I felt as if I couldn’t breathe throughout reading!
Antagonist – I’m going to go with Saskia from Ellen Faith’s Dear Darling. One of those characters who really grinds your gears and makes you want to step into the story to have a word with them yourself. Sit down, Saskia. Sit down.
Friend – Sarah Smith from Rebecca Raisin’s The Bookshop on the Corner is my fictional twin! She is addicted to romance novels just like me, and finds books absolutely magical. I think that if Sarah were a real person, we’d get on beautifully!

Which three Authors, dead or alive, would you invite to lunch and why?
Jill Mansell. I adore her. Her novels are beautiful and heart-warming and incredibly uplifting, and I don’t think I’ve ever come across one that I didn’t enjoy. Jill just “gets it”.
Stephen King. I have so many questions for this man. I went through a phase a couple of years back where I read nothing but Stephen King books. Cujo, The Tommyknockers, Needful Things (FAVOURITE!!!), IT and Thinner. I’ve always been in awe of King’s imagination. I would love to see what goes on in that mind of his. It must be amazing, and a little wild (in a good way!).
Cathy Bramley. This author is new pyjamas, hot chocolate and a crackling log-fire all rolled into one. Cathy’s books never fail to warm me from the inside out, and to sit down for a cuppa with her would be magical.

Ultimately, who is your favourite book or author?
Karen, I’m so sorry about this but I really can’t choose! Since I began my book blog Becca’s Books, I have been introduced and re-introduced to so many wonderful authors. The genres I usually stick to have been widened, and there are so many authors now who I just adore. I can’t pick between them. I can’t do it!

Rebecca Pugh Author Photo

Thank you for coming on to my blog today Sarah. I’m a big fan of Dougal, he is such a cheeky character and I’m so looking forward to reading Dougal’s Diary which has just been released with Crooked Cat. I have heard you read a passage couldn’t stop laughing so I am intrigued as to know more about him. I have some questions which I’m sure other readers would be also be delighted to know.

As it’s the New Year, has Dougal made any New Year’s resolutions?

Indeed, he has, three. Not to hump any dogs called Chester. To stop obsessing over his weight, or lack of. And never to listen to any orders his boss gives him, again.

Dougal has some big and unusual dreams for a dog, where does he get his inspiration from?

From listening to the advice of others; the radio left on when home alone, or lengthy journeys enduring bus and tube travel – always great ear-wigging opportunities. And magazines, glossy, of course

Does Dougal like to read and if so, what are his favourite books?

Dougal loves reading but found “The Hounds of the Baskervilles” a bit of an endurance test. “Black Beauty” made him cry. Over “Mrs Beeton’s Cookery Book”, he drooled. “Lassie”, he adored. But tops came “Adrian Mole”, a character he identifies with. He considers Sue Townsend his favourite author.

If Dougal became a film star, who would best portray his voice?

If Dougal were a girl he’d say Joanna Lumley – he loves her voice. Since he isn’t; either Benedict Cumberbatch or Anthony Hopkins, whichever is cheaper. Or possibly Tracey Ullman, if she can do Judi Dench, Dougal is sure she could sound like a dog with a deep baritone voice.

What is Dougal’s dream car?

A Jaguar F-Type Convertible. Great for traffic-watching and ensuring his hair blows gently in the breeze.

Who would be Dougal’s valentine?

He likes a pretty girl, so… If a dog, Perdita, who starred in “101 Dalmatians”. If human, Amy Adams: a multi- talented actress who appeared in “Enchanted” and many other films. They’d spend the evening dining, dancing, singing and laughing.

How does he keep his coat so beautiful?

Miraculous mud! A thick black stinky substance with handfuls of gravel folded through it. Imagine a cook adding flour to a sponge mix.

Does he prefer a bath or a shower?

The combination: a warm bath with additional use of shower. Aromatherapy oils desired but never experienced, followed by a blow-dry. For Dougal an intense pleasure, for the carer untold work: the cleaning of bath, floor and walls. And as for wet fur, the smell could well linger for days.

When Dougal goes shopping, what is his favourite store?

PETS AT HOME. Food, food glorious food! Broken bags of biscuits, pig’s ears and other treats conveniently placed at nose height. Dog heaven.

What does Dougal prefer for a treat, a chew or is he a bone dog?

Oh, give a dog a bone. A bone a day keeps the doctor away!

Where is Dougal planning to go for his next holiday/adventure?

Somewhere exotic; on Virgin Airlines, preferably with palm trees and miles of golden sand. He’s already packed his beach towel and factor 50, sunscreen.

Thank you Sarah.and of course, Dougal, as hilarious as ever. I’m so looking forward to enjoying this tale! T-A-L-E Dougal!

Dougal’s Diary

Has he chosen his owner well and landed on his paws? Dougal the Labradoodle puppy, a complete hypochondriac and Boris Johnson’s No 1 fan, arrives in Greenwich with great expectations. He longs to travel the world on Virgin Atlantic, dine at royal banquets and either become a superstar and party the night away or work as a doorman at the Savoy. Behaviour classes were never on his wish-list, neither were cliff-hanging experiences on the Thames, booze cruises to Calais or obsessions for eating socks. Can he survive life with a chaotic owner and her eccentric friends? Can he deal with his jealousy when a foster puppy comes to stay? And as for his dreams, will they ever come true?

Where can we order Dougal’s Diary?

Imogen has come to London to make it as a writer. At least, that was the plan. Finding herself in a dead-end job serving coffee to hipsters was not on her to-do list. And even if gorgeous colleague Declan does give her more of a buzz than a triple-shot cappuccino, Imogen can feel her dreams evaporating faster than the steam from an extra-hot latte.

Until her anonymous tell-all blog about London’s rudest customers goes viral – and suddenly, Imogen realises that landing the worst job in the world might just be the best thing that’s ever happened to her! As long as she can keep her identity to herself…

‘Pandora’s Prophecy’ is the third in the Greek Island mystery series but can be read as a standalone, although some characters from the previous books do make an appearance. Lisa and Mark are going through a rough patch, Vicky is seventeen and has just discovered that the man she thought was her father really isn’t, Ruth is getting over her husband’s betrayal after nearly twenty-five years of marriage. On the surface they have nothing in common except that they are all staying in the same hotel on a Greek Island. As they each come into contact with the mysterious Pandora, their lives will change forever. Bodies begin to pile up as a serial killer is on the loose who might just be targeting the hotel. The Island’s Police Chief, Christos Pavlides, tries to solve the puzzle but he has problems of his own to resolve. It seems that the local celebrity author is the one who holds the key.

Julie Ryan was born and brought up in a mining village near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. She graduated with a BA (hons) in French Language and Literature from Hull University. Since then she has lived and worked as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language in France, Greece, Poland and Thailand. She now lives in rural Gloucestershire with her husband, son and two cats, a rescue cat and a dippy cat with half a tail. She is so passionate about books that her collection is now threatening to outgrow her house, much to her husband’s annoyance, as she can’t bear to get rid of any! They have been attempting to renovate their home for the last ten years. She is the author of three novels set in Greece, “Jenna’s Journey”, “Sophia’s Secret” and ‘Pandora’s Prophecy.” She considers Greece to be her spiritual home and visits as often as she can. This series was inspired by her desire to return to Crete although there is a strong pull to revisit the Cyclades too.
